For the moment, what is official is that Pete Melvin has been hired by the Defender to draw up the rules for the 35th edition of the Cup, as he did for the 34th.
The new rule could be announced sometime in March, and appears to be oriented towards catamarans with rigid wing sails, obviously with foils, but a bit smaller than the AC 72s, to try and reduce the costs and have a competition in which more boats are capable of winning. There is talk of a cat of between 60 and 65 feet, but with the Cup, nothing is ever certain, and there are always lots of rumours.
Pete Melvin has also talked about the possibility of having, for certain elements, a ‘relative one-design’ philosophy, again with the aim of reducing costs, as well as guaranteeing better safety for the crews.
Finally, still concerning this 35th edition, Jimmy Spithill has announced that he will again be racing with Team USA, to try and win the trophy for the third time. The challengers have been warned – it won’t be easy to win back the trophy...
