The Pole route aboard a multihull: they’re off.
After the aborted attempt to cross the Arctic Ocean in 2011, following recurrent battery problems, Sebastien Roubinet has entirely redesigned his boat and built “Babouchka”, a machine which is half ice yacht, half catamaran, and will take him, with Vincent Berthet, from Alaska to Spitsbergen via the North Pole.
Here is the message they sent to us just before embarking:
“19th June 2013
We have been in Nome for three days now, and have taken advantage of the warm environment to attend to Babouchka. Finally in the colours of Esprit, as well as many other sponsors (stickers generously realized by Hexis), it took its first dip into the cold water of the Bering Sea under the curious gaze of the other occupants of the port (gold diggers).
And the result is a boat ready to leave to tackle the Arctic Ocean!”
