ARC 2013: the biggest Atlantic crossing in the world!

ARC 2013: the biggest Atlantic crossing in the world!

Already the 28th edition of the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers, where a huge number of multihulls tried to enter...but the places were limited!

24th November 2013: the three successive starts, a few cables from the port of Las Palmas, in the Canaries, was an incredible spectacle.
Over 200 sailing boats were preparing their spinnaker or gennaker, to tackle a long, 2,700-mile run, pushed along by the trade winds. 224 to be exact, with 1,204 crew members – including 26 under 26s – from 23 different countries. There could have been even more... Under the pressure of a longer waiting list every year, the organisers of the ARC have launched the ARC+, a second ‘transat’, leaving earlier from Mindelo, in the Cape Verde islands. The 50 boats entered however, finish in the same place, St. Lucia.
To return to Las Palmas: 25 multihulls were entitled to hear the starting gun. Why not more? Because our two or three-hulled boats take up twice as much space in the harbor as the monohulls! The multihulls were grouped together in an ad hoc basin; it would be hard to welcome them in the main harbour, where even the monohulls couldn’t all be accommodated. Good news for us multihull enthusiasts...
Finally, the Lagoon 560 Blue Ocean took first place on corrected time, a ‘persistent offender’, as it had already taken first place on the podium in 2011!
As for the ARC+, the winner on corrected time was the Lagoon 620 Enigma.
