CALLISTO a roaring trimaran
Some boats are born in a high-tech environment; ISO standards are working on their future and their design owes everything to “quality reference system”. Others, like the trimaran CALLISTO, cannot be designed according to this model, which is hardly compatible with their romantic origin. The nymph CALLISTO beloved of Zeus, the master of thunder, was changed into a she-bear by the jealous Hera and killed by the huntress Artemis. Zeus made her into a constellation in the sky. The sailors’ most trusted friend, our Ursa Major (the big dipper) is CALLISTO’s reflection.
Yachting includes few trimarans, since fashion and marketing have imposed their rule. The market is controlled mainly by the American Farrier and the Dane Dragonfly. Yet, the Lejeloux brothers built the wonderful Native & Creative on a Newick design, Samuel Boudon made the Challenge 37 and Philippe Rivière attempted PW epoxy on the big Wapa 50. Even Philippe Briand with the very fine PAILLE EN QUEUE and Nigel Irens with NOOTKA were unable to come out with more than two units! Nothing doing, trimarans do not reach their audience! We could imagine that a prestige designer and a major shipyard will one day meet the challenge of producing a popular French trimaran, but nothing could be less certain! In the meantime, these unpredictable craft are designed and built by a small club of aficionados, as excited as they are exciting. Away from the highways of industrial yachting, they produce splendid unique creations for demanding enthusiasts; CALLISTO trimaran was made by one of these artists.
