The dry season is from April to October. It is generally the best period for sailing among the islands of the Indian Ocean, with the tradewinds setting in gradually to reach speeds of 15 to 20 knots. The temperatures are very pleasant: 25-30°C (77-86°F).
The northwest monsoon (October to April) brings short intense rains, especially in November and January. On land, the breezes cool the climate. Temperatures are stable, usually around 29°C/85°F. It should be noted that, according to the islands (Seychelles, Madagascar, Mauritius, Malaysia or Thailand…), conditions may vary considerably…

The starting base for renters tempted by Thailand is Phuket Island. From there, several possibilities are available to you. First of all Similan and Surin islands, located 60 miles northwest of Phuket. Over a distance of a dozen miles, you will discover the wilderness of nine granite islands covered with vegetation. You can land on some beaches of white sand lined with coral reefs. This is the preserve of divers: spectacular seafloors, a profusion of corals and fishes of all kinds, and often encounter with manta rays and whale sharks.
Some 50 miles further north, near the Burmese border, discover the Surin archipelago, also deserted and covered with jungle and offering very fine beaches. There is a village of gypsies of the sea, who usually living on their sampans, but have settled here…
Starting once again from Phuket, you can sail freely in the fantastic Phangnga Bay with its limestone islets sculpted by the elements over millions of years.
When leaving the Bay to the southeast, toward Krabi, discover the anchorage of Pra Nang. Two splendid beaches surrounded by cliffs and accessible only from the sea…
From Krabi to the Phi Phi islands, to the west, you will sail past some superb islands, planted with bamboo and tamarind trees, lined with fine beaches (some of the film Pirate was shot in these islands). Phi Phi: two large magnificent islands, colorful cliffs, all more than 300 m high, over which eagles soar, line the lagoons of transparent water with dazzling beaches. This is a mecca for deep-sea fishing.
Thailand offers a wonderful sailing area with beaches of white sand lined with luxuriant vegetation and waters that range from turquoise blue to emerald green. There, at least, you won’t be disturbed by the neighbors at anchorage…
