Catana: two awaited launches
12 mar 2008
Two giants of the sea were launched in Canet en Roussillon harbour on 27th and 28th February 2008. After the launch of the first Catana 65 (20m), ‘Orion’, a 26.5m custom catamaran built for a South African customer, was brought out of the yard.
‘Orion’ is one of the very rare long-distance cruising multihulls over 25m to be built in composite materials. Its surface area is the equivalent of a tennis court and it is as high as a 14-storey building once the mast is stepped; inside: a 200m² home with independent electricity and fresh water production.
In economic terms, ‘Orion’ represents 5,000 days work at Catana and the same from outside for the materials, the equipment and sub-contracting; it cost as much as 700 small cars… After this technical launch, it will take several weeks to rig, adjust and finish equipping this exceptional catamaran, which we hope to be able to test in May…
