It will once again be a multihull, of course, and the Cup’s boat will again be a catamaran. The new AC will be 62 feet long, and will of course be equipped with foils and a rigid wing sail. It will be sailed by 8 crew (as opposed to 11 for the AC 72) and will sail at between 5 and 25 knots.
As for new features, there is now a nationality rule, and 2 of the 8 crew aboard must be of the same nationality as the challenge. The Cup will be raced in 2017, but we still don’t know where; even though San Francisco and Hawaii are the favorites, we will have to wait a while for more information (31st December 2014 at the latest).
To qualify, the challengers will have to race in AC 45s in 2015 and 2016 (when they should be equipped with foils), and these regattas will count towards access to the final. For the first time in the Cup’s history, the defender (Team USA) will be racing with its challengers, and the winner of the series will start the final with a one point lead...
Each challenger will be allowed to build just one AC 62, whilst the defender will have the enormous advantage of being able to build two. It will be best to avoid breakages, especially as each team will only be allowed to build two wing sails and 6 pairs of 'daggerboard-foils’...
The next important date is the 8th August, as this is the date when each interested syndicate will have to pay the entry fee of a cool 1,075,000 US$!
To date, in addition to the Challenger of Record, Team Australia, we should be able to count on Team New Zealand and the Italians from Luna Rossa. Ben Ainslie has announced that he has already found 40% of the £80 million budget he considers necessary for his campaign. Team France, led by Franck Cammas, Michel Desjoyeaux and Olivier de Kersauson, remains discreet about the financing of the project, but the team appears confident. Finally, the Swedes from Artemis should also be present.
