Spear It Animal

A Major Refit Project

If you follow any multihull-based YouTube channels, this young American couple will need no introduction. They’d been cruising the Bahamas and the Caribbean aboard their 50-foot monohull, but were dreaming of better things. And one day, an opportunity presented itself that they couldn’t refuse. In the wake of the devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl in the Grenadines, they came across a Lagoon 450 that looked like it might be within their budget. There was just the small matter of it being upside down in the mangroves of Tyrrel Bay on the island of Carriacou…

Raf was sailing with friends on his boat, Sascha with family on hers. After crossing paths in the Caribbean, the two crews became blue water buddy boats and after a few months, romance blossomed. The couple set about looking for a boat of their own, eventually buying a Beneteau monohull that needed a serious amount of work. Despite it only having one hull, they transformed it into a great looking boat and continued their Caribbean cruising. But then came their big opportunity. Buying a catamaran that was upside down was obviously going to be a huge gamble – it had lost its rig but otherwise appeared to have no serious structural damage. Sadly, looters had already been aboard and both engines were missing. The sailors were undeterred and spent the next seven weeks getting their catamaran ready to be flipped the right way up. Despite being flooded in the process, they managed to get it out into the anchorage to complete preparations for towing the boat 40 miles south to Grenada where they could begin their major refit. So, their Lagoon 450 – it’s a SportTop version – is now on the hard at Spice Island Marine boatyard. They parted with their monohull by way of a lottery-style draw, and the proceeds from that are funding the catamaran rebuild. One of their first jobs has been to remove all the wiring and much of the furniture, giving them access to what needs repairing. With youth and enthusiasm on their side – not to mention their refit experience on the monohull – this dynamic couple have got what it takes to complete this challenging project before they can continue their journey around the world.
