Specializing in the measurement of loads applied to rigging, Cyclops Marine has been developing load sensors for several years, used by boatyards and riggers, particularly for original equipment installations.
Until now, rig load data has remained difficult for most sailors to interpret; it was largely reserved for technical use or for highly experienced navigators. With the Smart Rig Manager, Cyclops Marine now offers a simple and visual way to read this data directly onboard, on Garmin, Raymarine, and B&G displays.
In port, the tool makes it easy to retrieve the tension settings recommended by the yard or rigger. Where tuning was often based on experience, there is now a clear reference point to adjust rigging before departure. Under sail, loads are visible in real time, with an immediate reading of operating zones. The benefit is twofold: avoiding occasional overloads, but also underloads - more subtle, yet capable of causing long-term fatigue to the rig.
On multihulls, it is indeed more difficult to assess the actual loads applied to the rigging. The continuous visualization provided by Cyclops Marine therefore offers a particularly valuable reference.
The system is based on a simple principle: upstream, reference values are defined according to the multihull model and its rig configuration. Onboard, the user accesses an interface connected to the sensors, displaying loads directly on the navigation instruments. Data is no longer presented as raw numbers, but through visual indicators that are immediately understandable. “Rigging is a key safety element onboard,” reminds Alice Henderson, Marketing Director. “With Smart Rig Manager, the idea is to make this information simple and accessible.”
In case of doubt or changes in the multihull’s behavior, the recorded data can be shared with a rigger to fine-tune settings based on concrete information. The system also offers a navigation history, allowing users to visualize the loads experienced by the rig over time.
The Smart Rig Manager will be unveiled in a world premiere at the International Multihull Show in La Grande-Motte, with an installation aboard the Outremer 48 (also presented as a world premiere), as well as on the Harken stand.
