Kronos is a new 100% electric outboard motor from Weenav, combining power, silence, and ease of installation. Developed for the motorboat market, and therefore powercats, this motor is positioned in the intensive daytime use sector, with shore-power charging possible from 20 to 90% in just 20 minutes.
Available in six versions ranging from 80 to 300 horsepower, the Kronos delivers a maximum torque of 752 Nm (550 ft lb) at the propeller and integrates the entire electromechanical chain under the cover: motor, speed control, on-board charger, and of course a Combo CCS2 plug for the fast charging mentioned above. The plug-and-play architecture facilitates integration, both on new boats and as part of a retrofit.
As for the batteries, each 5.12 kWh LiFePO₄ module weighs 49.5 kg (110 lbs). Depending on the size of the powertrain, 8 to 26 modules are required, to make a total capacity of 41 to 133 kWh. The system is supplied by PowerTech Systems and controlled by an exclusive integrated management system developed with Garmin via EmpirBus, which centralizes data and commands and allows remote monitoring. The only drawback to this technology is, of course, the weight of the batteries—our test RIB, with its 200 HP 351 kg (774 lb.) motor and 13 battery modules, weighed in at almost a ton, compared to less than 300 kg (660 lbs) for a 300 HP combustion engine and 50 liters (13 US gallons) of fuel.
However, this type of powertrain opens up interesting prospects for low-emission zones and marine protected areas, where restrictions on internal combustion engines are becoming increasingly common.
