We featured the Gunboat 72 in our test in Multihulls World #193; we find hull #2 here in Saint Martin: it's the largest multihull entered in the 2026 Caribbean Multihull Challenge.
Layla, as she's called, is now a regular at the event… and so is her skipper. Our man is none other than Brian Thompson – the only British sailor to have completed four non-stop circumnavigations of the globe. The skipper, who warmed up by crossing the Atlantic in just 5 days aboard the MOD70 Argo, finds himself at the helm of a much heavier multihull, of course… Nevertheless, he positions his 72-foot vessel like a Hobie Cat, not hesitating to tack at the starting line. While the lighter multihulls managed to regain the lead in real time, it was still Layla that emerged victorious in corrected time at the awards ceremony that evening.
The boss at the CMC? That's Brian…
