Rotomolded polyethylene is reminiscent of the 1980s: the sailboards and tenders that accompanied many of our formative years... Today, this particularly robust material is just as well-suited to mass production as ever, but it’s much lighter and the anti-UV treatments are much more effective.
Another advantage, and not the least in the transition to forever green, is that rotomolded material can be recycled. In fact, manufacturers such as Hobie and RS produce very attractive sport catamarans in rotomolded polyethylene, so why not imagine a powercat also made in rotomolded polyethylene? This is what Slovenian manufacturer Roto Nautica has done with its Korkyra 650, presented at the recent boot Düsseldorf. The hull is very well designed (by J&J Design), and the boat offers a wide range of drivetrain options, including an outboard motor that can be either internal combustion or electric... as well as twin engines - also internal combustion or electric - but this time with inboard options. The deck layout features a cockpit for up to 10 people, protected by an optional large bimini.
