MODX 58

The 70’s Little Brother Becomes a Trimaran

Following the MODX 70, Océan Développement is adapting its zero-emission multihull concept to a more compact format... but with one major difference: the 58 - still designed by VPLP - is now a trimaran.

The Lorient-based builder nevertheless remains faithful to its philosophy: electric propulsion and renewable energy, with no use of fossil fuels while underway. Sail propulsion is provided by one of the MODX 70’s two 1,076 sq ft (100 m²) AeroForce inflatable wings. This single wing remains fully automated and is mounted on a retractable telescopic mast. With no winches or lines to handle, it is controlled from a touchscreen.

Once the rig is retracted, the multihull regains the profile of an electric powercat in just a few minutes. Energy is stored in 175 kWh of batteries, while 915 sq ft (85 m²) of solar panels can deliver up to 17 kWp. Hydrogeneration completes the system. MODX claims a range of 110 miles under electric power and speeds of up to 16 knots “under wing” in 20 knots of wind. In terms of life on board, more than 1,636 sq ft (152 m²) of living space is announced, including a 624 sq ft (58 m²) panoramic saloon and large protected outdoor areas. Three or four cabins are planned depending on the options, while the central hull incorporates a tender garage. No official launch date has yet been announced.
