The Grand Tourer Powercat

With the Coupe range, Aquila opened a new chapter in its powerboat lineup at the 2025 Miami International Boat Show. More sheltered than a Sport model, yet significantly more open than a multipower featuring a traditional superstructure, the 42 and 46 Coupe models aim to appeal to recreational boaters seeking a fast, comfortable, and easy-to-live-aboard vessel. Having tested the 46 in Multihulls World # 202, we’re now taking a look at its smaller sistership, the 42. Its main technical selling point is a spectacular carbon foil included as standard, designed not to make the catamaran fly, but to reduce fuel consumption while allowing it to reach speeds of 40 knots.

A New Interpretation of Powercats


The Coupe models are not simply more enclosed versions of the Sport version. Aquila is promoting a genuine intermediate concept, designed for recreational boaters who appreciate the performance of a dayboat but want better protection from the wind, sun, or spray. The generously glazed helm area, enclosed by an imposing sliding window, maintains excellent communication with the cockpit while allowing for sailing in an air-conditioned environment should conditions demand.
The shipyard offers two distinct powertrain options. The outboard version, unveiled at the world premiere in Miami, prioritizes pure performance and ease of maintenance. The model we tested was powered by a pair of 440 hp Volvo Penta D6 engines coupled to DPI dual-propeller drive units. According to Aquila, this diesel configuration, with the same fuel capacity, nearly doubles the range while sacrificing only a limited amount of storage space in the hulls.
