Gill Offshore OS26 Jacket and Trousers

Our Test

This new combination of seawear from Gill is an interesting product for sailors who might not always be sailing in fair weather and winds of less than 20 knots... without feeling weighed down by overly heavy and stiff foulies.

Gill has succeeded in designing marine clothing that is lightweight, effective, well cut and, last but not least, suited to the typical movements of a skipper or crew member on the deck of a multihull.

Trousers

The salopettes are fully assembled with waterproof seams and feature a stretch back panel for added comfort. At the front, the YKK zipper slides into an internal waterproof gusset. The shoulders are adjustable with Velcro. There are two fleece-lined hand warmer pockets and a deep cargo pocket on the thigh with a flap as well as a D-ring for attaching marine tools or a lifeline. At the ankles, a wide Velcro flap allows for adjustment. The manufacturer specifies high-strength polyamide reinforcements at the knees and seat, which are effective at limiting abrasion but do not provide any cushioning in terms of comfort. However, the elasticated waist allows for great freedom of movement. The women’s version has crossed straps at the back and side openings.

Jacket

The jacket, also available in men's and women's versions, is fully lined with mesh drainage panels and assembled with waterproof seams and is also equipped with raised reflective areas. It features a two-way zipper at the front protected by a double flap, adjustable outer cuffs with inner polyurethane sleeves for comfort and to prevent water ingress. There are two zipped chest pockets, two cargo pockets and an inside pocket, which is also zipped.

On the watchkeeping-jacket market, the main feature of the OS26J – as it is known by its code name – is its very high fleece-lined collar, which has a large flap that fastens with Velcro.

In practice, it tends to flap around if left open. The lined hood provides almost total protection for the face, but despite the two-way adjustment system, it wasn’t that easy to maintain good visibility during our initial trials.

Tested in wet and windy conditions, the OS26J jacket proved to be completely waterproof and quite flexible.
