In 1937, Robert Dumas, a member of the Hermès family, was strolling along the Normandy coastline when he noticed some boats. The anchor chains mooring them caught his eye—the contours of the iconic anchor chain were already taking shape. A perfect example of “the intelligence of the eye,” the beauty of the useful, so often at work at Hermès. In 1938, the silver Chaine d’Ancre bracelet was born, allowing the Maison to set sail into unchartered waters. From its launch, this cult piece of jewelry was an immediate success and was available in the form of rings, necklaces, and sautoirs in silver or set with diamonds, and more rarely in gold. Each piece is finished by hand, guaranteeing exceptional quality and a timeless look. Over the years, the chaine d’ancre has become a recurring motif in the Hermès collections, also appearing on watches and accessories, confirming its place in the world of luxury. Since then, this motif has been an inexhaustible source of inspiration, constantly reinterpreted freely in a multitude of forms and materials.
Since 1837, Hermès has remained faithful to its artisanal model and humanist values. Creative freedom, the constant search for the finest materials, and the transmission of exceptional expertise, which enable the creation of useful, durable, and elegant objects, forge the uniqueness of the Hermès Maison.
Family-owned, independent, and responsible, the company is committed to keeping most of its production in France, at its 60 production and training sites, while developing a strong international distribution network of 293 stores across 45 countries.
