This 40th edition of the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers brought the 32 multihulls we had seen in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, safely into port after a fine 2,700-nautical-mile Atlantic crossing. We now catch up with the fleet in Saint Lucia.
We met Chris, the owner of Cut & Run, one of the five Lagoon 46s entered in the ARC. Four days after arriving in Rodney Bay, the Australian skipper - well rested and freshly shaven - shared his story and told us about his first ocean crossing. “We bought this catamaran with my wife two years ago in the Mediterranean and spent two seasons there before deciding to bring Cut & Run home to the Gold Coast. For this first major crossing, it seemed wise to sign up for the ARC, whose organization is highly professional and strongly focused on safety.”
Chris, who served for 20 years in the Navy, had no trouble (re)assembling a real crew of five warriors for the start in Gibraltar - whom we all found bearded again on arrival after a crossing that was far from as calm as forecasted, with squalls reaching up to 40 knots and plenty of downwind sail issues to deal with. After a well-earned exploration of the Caribbean arc, Cut & Run will continue on to the Panama Canal next March before crossing the Pacific. The Lagoon 46 will likely spend a year in Polynesia before finally making her way to Australia - a long way from home!
