Protected by the long Baja California Peninsula, the Sea of Cortez stretches for more than 1,100 km (680 mi) between mainland Mexico and the Pacific Ocean. Fringed by almost 4,000 km (2,500 miles) of coastline, it alternates between deserted bays, ocher cliffs, pristine beaches and volcanic islands, many of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Its waters, which regularly reach 28°C (82°F), are home to exceptional marine life, including dolphins, sea lions, turtles, mobula rays and, depending on the season, whale sharks - not to mention the whales that frequent the region throughout the year. Another major advantage is that, unlike the Caribbean, catamaran chartering remains relatively undeveloped here.
