The Multihulls World community will already be familiar with this unusual rigid-wing catamaran designed by Philippe Marcovich and Hugues de Turckheim, as we tested it three years ago in Forever Green Special Edition #22. Afinado, as it is called, will be unveiled to the public for the first time at La Grande-Motte.
This all-carbon multihull, some 33 feet (10 meters) long and 29 feet (9 meters) in beam - including its ladders for hiking out - weighs barely a ton. With its elegant canoe-shaped bows, it certainly has style, but it’s not its design that should catch your eye… rather, look up a bit to discover a 56-foot (17-meter) carbon mast supporting an astonishing 645-square-foot (60-square-meter) flexible, thick wing called the ACCWing (which stands for automatic camber control wing). The principle is to have the option, depending on the course and wind strength, of a flat or cambered profile, much like an airplane wing. The similarity to modern aircraft doesn’t stop there, as the system operates automatically thanks to internal flexible “muscles.”
