Founded just five years ago, the Astus Boat Club association now brings together around 60 Astus trimaran owners and has recently introduced a Trophy system rewarding participation and results in various regattas open to multihulls rated under the Multi 2000 rule.
In this context, Pierre Breban, president of the association, invited me to take part as media crewman aboard the Golfe Morbihan Tour, an event particularly technical when it comes to current management. Currents can be extremely strong in this area, while numerous counter-currents can be found close to beaches, headlands, and rocks.
So I joined Jean-Hubert Pommois, head of the shipyard, aboard his Astus 26.5, together with Jérôme, our helmsman. Organized by the SRV (Société des Régates de Vannes), this regatta is unique in that it brings together highly diverse fleets: classic rigs, foiling boards, monohull cruisers, dinghies, and of course cruising multihulls - 63 entries in total!
Six Astus boats were entered in the cruising multihull category: four Astus 20.5s, one older-generation Astus 22, in addition to our Astus 26.5. The course had to be shortened slightly due to a rather light easterly breeze, but we had a fantastic time and even managed to secure a podium finish!
