Merfyn Owen and Allen Clarke founded their naval architecture firm in 1991; the English duo quickly made a name for themselves within the IMOCA 60 and Class40 communities. A few one-offs and superyachts have also caused a stir… but here we are talking about monohulls.
Therefore, the OC 94 project, developed for a European client based in the United States, also deserves special attention: “We are finalizing the choice of builder with the client, and when construction begins, it will be our first multihull built in almost thirty years,” explains Merfyn Owen. To top it all off, the OC 94 combines elements rarely found together on a catamaran platform: the use of reinforced aluminum for ice navigation, a ketch rig that reduces sail area and thus simplifies maneuvers, retractable daggerboards for navigating shallow waters, hybrid propulsion to limit fuel consumption, and finally, an interior optimized for polar conditions.
With its overall length of 22 meters, "the OC 194 is large enough to carry significant payloads while remaining manageable for private use,” continues Merfyn. “This multihull challenges the preconceived notion that only monohulls are suitable for exploring high latitudes. In doing so, it opens a new path: that of the polar expedition multihull.”
