Yanmar took the opportunity of Metstrade to reveal their VC30, a new generation system of engine controls that optimizes piloting, display, and maneuvering.
We met up with Bas Eerden, Global Sales Manager at Yanmar Marine, who summarized the engine manufacturer’s approach: simplify installation, make the interface clearer, and improve control precision.
The VC30 stands out first and foremost for its streamlined architecture: a single ECU, fewer intermediate modules, and a more direct configuration. For boatbuilders, this leads to time savings in both new installations and when retrofitting. For users, it translates into a control panel where essential information is better organized.
The new 4.3-inch screen is really easy to read. Its high brightness and optical bonding limit glare, while an NMEA 2000 output allows immediate integration with existing electronics. The physical controls have also been redesigned: joysticks, panels, and buttons are now more consistent and sturdier, with a more responsive feel.
The introduction of a dedicated joystick is one of the highlights of this development: compatible with Vetus bow thrusters, it makes approaching congested areas much easier and provides appreciable precision control, particularly aboard multihulls or other craft with a large beam. Maneuvering is done with the touch of a finger, simply by pointing the joystick in the desired direction, including moving the multihull parallel alongside the dock. The system is available for conventional inboard and sterndrive transmissions, covering a wide range of installations.
The VC30 is compatible with most Yanmar common rail engines, from the 40 HP JH-CR to the 640 HP 6LT. It is therefore aimed at practically all sailing multihulls as well as medium to large multipowers.
