It is a fact: the purchase price remains one of the main barriers to switching to electric propulsion. British manufacturer RAD is attempting to partly overcome this obstacle with a new financing package for its RAD 40 electric outboard.

Unveiled at the Southampton International Boat Show, it provides a complete system from £ 995 ex-tax per month, with full ownership of the equipment at the end of the contract.
The package includes not only the RAD 40 outboard, but also the battery, steering wheel, throttle, control units and wiring, with the complete system configured to suit the boat. Delivering 40 kW continuously, the RAD 40 is available with a short or long shaft. For now, this financing package seems primarily suited to smaller monohulls, but there is nothing to prevent us imagining twin RAD 40s on the transom of a small powercat - the manufacturer also offers twin-engine configurations.
Financing is available over three, four or five years with fixed monthly payments. It is a formula already widely used in the automotive industry and one that could make sense in boating: it significantly reduces the initial investment required to switch to electric propulsion and, above all, provides an alternative to rising fuel prices. An interesting approach to watch, particularly for small power multihulls.
