ARC 2025

32 Multihulls at the Start of the 40th Edition!

Of the 148 boats registered for the transatlantic rally that has linked Las Palmas to the Caribbean since 1986, 145 set sail this year on Sunday, November 23. Among this fleet of sailboats ranging from 33 to 82 feet (10 to 25 meters) in length, 32 multihulls pointed their bows southwest, bound for Saint Lucia, 2,700 nautical miles away by the shortest route.

The wet and windy weather of the previous day gave way to beautiful clear skies and the air temperature rose a little, due to the lack of trade winds. As a result, the fleet's departure proved somewhat laborious, especially for the multihulls that were “launched” first, as a thermal breeze was just beginning to take hold on the water. It was difficult to trim the sails properly with 4 knots of wind and residual swell... Nevertheless, the atmosphere seemed excellent aboard all the multihulls that we followed for a few miles.

The division that brings together the 30 catamarans and 2 trimarans entered in the rally can use their motors – accepting a penalty, of course. Mechanical propulsion therefore becomes part of the game if used to help you catch the trade winds more quickly.

For this anniversary edition, Andrew Bishop made the trip to Gran Canaria. He was the head of the World Cruising Club from 2006 to 2022, following in the footsteps of ARC founder Jimmy Cornell, who was unable to attend due to the launch of his latest book.

For this 2025 edition, we noted the strong presence of Lagoon, particularly the 46: with five examples entered, this model is the most represented sailboat in the entire fleet.

Multihulls World will of course be there to welcome the sailors as they arrive in Saint Lucia - stay tuned!
