Aquila 45 Sail

The Smart Marriage of Power and Sail

Sailing purists will certainly find fault with a catamaran that favors large coachroof windows over sharp bows, does away with the trampolines and, in the process, adds a forward door.

They may even grit their teeth a little when they discover a coachroof arch that provides direct access to the helm station, which features a “car-door”-style edge to starboard. The same goes for the dual standing/seated helm seat. Nor will they appreciate the tender crane - despite how practical it is when combined with wide aft platforms and a fixed platform - or all the robust stainless-steel fittings. Is there any point continuing with the air conditioning, refrigeration capacity and overall comfort?

Our view? The designers have taken all the best ideas from powerboating and intelligently applied them to sailing - well done!

Our quick assessment, ahead of the full test to be published very soon, during our delivery trip between Cannes and Saint-Raphaël revealed a boat that is very well thought out for both Owner and charter use. Under gennaker, with less than 8 knots of wind, the Aquila maintained a steady 5 knots, proving that it could quickly do without its engines. The Aquila 50’s little brother sold six units during the Cannes Yachting Festival - “one a day,” jokes Nick Harvey, the brand’s Sales Director…
