After a transatlantic warm-up in the company of famous YouTuber Inoxtag (see MM232), sailor Guirec Soudée set off from Brest on Tuesday, December 23, to take on the most demanding solo challenge there is: a westabout circumnavigation of the globe, sailing against the prevailing winds and currents.
Aboard his Ultim MACSF - a proven 31-meter trimaran - the skipper will first round Cape Horn before rounding Antarctica, then pass Cape Leeuwin, the Cape of Good Hope, and finally head back north to Brest. Nearly 30,000 nautical miles await Guirec, from Brest to Brest, as he weaves his way around the depressions that will lie in his path. It is undoubtedly the boldest round-the-world voyage in maritime history, and one that has never been completed solo and non-stop on a multihull.
To date, the record for a westabout circumnavigation is held on a monohull by Jean-Luc Van Den Heede, who set it 21 years ago in 122 days and 14 hours. On multihulls, only two attempts have been made - both unsuccessful: Yves Le Blevec in 2017 on the Ultim Actual, and the duo of Romain Pilliard and Alex Pella in 2021 aboard Use It Again.
