The year 2025 brought its share of innovations, among which one sparked a reflection for me on the sustainability of boating…
After testing the ModX 70, the first luxury bluewater cruising catamaran to operate entirely without fossil fuels, I realized just how remarkably efficient the wings used for propulsion are, as well as for replenishing onboard electrical energy through hydro-generation. Energy Observer, for instance, was only able to produce hydrogen once wings were installed, providing sufficient energy thanks to consistently steady average speeds of around fifteen knots.
While the AC72s of SailGP and the AC75s of the America’s Cup have embraced this type of propulsion to push performance boundaries, one cannot help but notice the speed at which they move across the water and the explosiveness of their maneuvers. Although expectations in terms of top speed are not exactly the same for cruising yachts, these wings — several types of which are already available and likely even more by 2026 — above all bring greater ease of handling, and even automation of maneuvers, as experienced aboard the ModX 70.
Could this simplification of sail handling, making it accessible even to beginner crews, help make our pastime more accessible and, in doing so, ensure its long-term sustainability?
Wishing you all a wonderful holiday season!
