Founded in 1964 by sailor and designer Keith Musto, the eponymous British brand quickly made a name for itself in the field of technical clothing designed for boating. From the wide range of products available today, we tested the BR1 model provided to us by Primaloft, the manufacturer of the insulating material used in this jacket.
The BR1 jacket is designed for “coastal” use, meaning it is not intended for extreme conditions such as offshore racing or dinghy sailing. This type of garment is ideal for recreational catamaran sailing, where the comfort and protection it offers mean that this range of clothing can also be put to “offshore” use.
The Musto jacket provides immediate shelter from the wind and an excellent feeling of protection without being too hot in the sun - in my opinion, it’s a good compromise for a wide range of uses, from the Caribbean with its trade winds and warm sea spray to cooler latitudes in mid-season. The BR1 outer membranes do their job in terms of waterproofing and breathability, and all the materials used in the jacket (as well as its cut) allow for satisfactory freedom of movement. In terms of details, we also like the reflective hood, which is adjustable and packs away in into the protective collar. Other reflective details are found on the seams and logo, and while these may be a little discreet in terms of safety, they do allow for “urban” use. The main double-opening pockets lined with brushed fleece are perfect for keeping your hands warm. A clever Velcro system keeps the pockets in place while allowing them to be turned inside out for cleaning. These pockets are complemented by two other exterior Velcro pockets and an inner zippered pocket for securing personal items. To prevent water and wind from entering, the cuffs feature an exterior Velcro closure and an adjustable interior neoprene gusset. The elastic waist can also be adjusted and has two secure buckles.
