Scanstrut Navlight

A Navigation Light Powered Without Electrical Contacts

Scanstrut will take advantage of IBEX, taking place from October 6 to 8 in Tampa, Florida, to present a solution developed with American company Perko: a removable navigation light powered without any exposed electrical contacts.

The principle behind the Wireless Powered Nav Light is simple: the Perko 360° white LED light is mounted on a removable pole, but no metal connection is required between the pole and its base. Scanstrut uses contactless power transfer. By eliminating connections exposed to moisture, spray and corrosion, the system directly addresses one of the weak points of removable navigation lights.

The base, which incorporates fully encapsulated electronics, is rated IPX6. When the pole is removed, a cover automatically closes over the mount, which is then protected to IPX4. The fasteners are made from 316 stainless steel, and a locking mechanism holds the light securely in place.

Based in the United Kingdom, Scanstrut has been developing mounting, charging and power systems for marine electronics for more than 35 years. Perko, an American company founded in 1907 and based in Florida, is a long-established specialist in marine hardware and navigation lights. Their partnership therefore seems quite logical: Scanstrut provides the wireless power technology, while Perko brings the light itself and its regulatory expertise.

The concept should be of particular interest for multihulls, tenders and dayboats using lights that are regularly installed and removed - anyone who has already used battery-powered lights will be familiar with the problems of watertightness, and therefore reliability…

Pricing and availability have yet to be confirmed and are expected to be announced during the official presentation at IBEX.
