Italian specialist in lightweight photovoltaics, Solbian has been developing solar panels since 2007, notably for racing sailboats and bluewater cruising. With the SunBoard Lifeline Solar Kit, the brand is exploring a new approach: installing a rigid panel directly on the lifelines to make use of a generally unused area without taking up space on the coachroof or deck.

The first rigid panel developed by Solbian, the SunBoard features a lightweight, rigid honeycomb structure. Its mounting on the lifelines allows it to be adjusted from 0 to 90° to take account of the sun’s position, the boat’s heading or heel, thereby optimizing output. Two versions are available, rated at 80 and 108 Wp, with high-efficiency cells.
The idea seems particularly appealing at anchor, where the panels can be deployed and repositioned throughout the day. Underway, the equation is less straightforward: while Solbian states that the multipoint mounting system limits movement, a rigid panel deployed outside the lifelines is inevitably more exposed to spray, waves and maneuvers. Depending on conditions, its vertical stowed position should therefore be preferred.
On a bluewater cruising multihull, the concept nevertheless remains interesting for increasing solar output without taking up additional space on the coachroof. It remains to be seen in practice how easy the system is to handle and how well it holds up after a few thousand miles.
