The crews gradually approached the starting line, but Aeolus was hardly playing along! With just 4 to 6 knots of wind from the north to northeast forecast, Graham even expected much of the fleet to start under engine power. In the end, only the Outremer appeared to be sailing with her engines switched off. A leisurely start after a week of preparations, safety inspections and particularly friendly gatherings on the docks.
The first 900 nautical miles to Mindelo could nevertheless require a little patience. The trade winds remain inconsistent, and several areas of calm are complicating the passage south toward Cape Verde. Some crews may choose to head closer to the African coast in search of stronger winds.
Following the Cape Verde stopover, the fleet is scheduled to set off again on November 11, with 2,130 nautical miles to cover before reaching Marie-Galante, Guadeloupe. The first arrivals are expected from November 23 onward.
Graham also met the crews of all nine participating catamarans, and their video interviews will soon be available on our media channels!
