Setting off on a multihull... without necessarily leaving everything behind!

I can recall letters, and later emails, from readers to their favorite boating magazine: “You’ve had us dreaming for years, but now it’s our turn to set off... We’d like to cancel our subscription - thanks for everything!” That was 20 years ago, maybe 15. It felt good, but it was still one subscriber we’d lost at least for a few years... Today, there are even more of you setting off - and who love multihulls. The figures for the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers speak for themselves: more than 200 boats, including some sixty catamarans and trimarans, crossed the Atlantic this time, requiring three separate departures from Las Palmas! In short, blue water cruising is a fully subscribed. The health crisis is undoubtedly a factor. Despite the constraints put in place by most governments, many crews have decided to cast off. To experience an ocean crossing, where you don’t need repeated Covid tests, without having to constantly present a QR code, or put a face mask on. To feel free, and paradoxically protected.

What has changed, however, is that we no longer receive your farewell messages. On the contrary, you willingly offer to share your experiences and for us to follow you on your peregrinations. Today, setting off blue water cruising doesn’t mean cutting yourself off from the world. Satellite communications and connection possibilities at your ports of call make it possible to stay in touch with loved ones and even... to continue working. Little by little, digital technology is becoming part of our lives. At the beginning of 2022, half of you are now reading this editorial online or in pdf format... However, we remain faithful to the “print version” of the magazine - even though paper is becoming a rare and very expensive material, and therefore a luxury product. But whatever the medium, our objective has remained the same since 1985: to share with you the world of multihulls.
