Have Outremer Yachting found the magic recipe for a cruising catamaran? You could be forgiven for thinking so, now that the 100th Outremer 51 has been dispatched from the shipyard’s hangars at La Grande-Motte in the South of France.
This extraordinary production figure for a model that’s not part of a large-scale production run deserves a closer look. The first model from the new team was the Outremer 49, launched in 2009. With its new design by Barreau/Neuman, came serious gains in comfort and a much more flattering finish. 23 examples of this ocean cruising catamaran were produced over a 4-year period... and then in 2013, it was replaced by the 51, a revised version. The sugarscoops were enlarged, turning them into a living space, and the interior was also redesigned. The latest version of Outremer Yachting's bestseller was unveiled in 2018 with a successful restyling: with its sculpted topsides by Patrick Le Quément and its inverted bows, the 51's silhouette unambiguously conveys an ambition for performance - optional carbon bulkheads, rotating mast or even lightweight daggerboards are available. Inside, the chart table and galley are more ergonomic and spacious. As for all the linings and finishes, they have been upgraded. For Outremer Yachting, the temptation to soon launch a replacement for the 51 after a 10-year career seems legitimate...
