Windelo 55 Sport

First Run Before the Atlantic

Eight knots of wind at most is a little light for a proper test… and yet, just after its presentation at the Cannes Yachting Festival, the Windelo 55 Sport has already shown us that it has some serious arguments to make in the highly competitive fast bluewater cruising catamaran category.

Far more than a Windelo 54 with a few performance options added, the 55 Sport has undergone a genuine optimization program. Lighter and carrying more sail, it adopts more pronounced reverse bows to extend the waterline, daggerboards lengthened by 2'2" (65 cm) and new carbon rudders. The rig has also evolved, with a carbon mast raised by 3'3" (1 m), Kevlar standing rigging and a lengthened carbon forward crossbeam. The structure and accommodation have also been subjected to a weight-saving program, with the builder claiming a performance gain of at least 10% compared with the 54.

For the rest, we are very much aboard a Windelo, with the brand’s signature forward cockpit incorporating the helm station and all sail-handling lines led back to it. This arrangement completely redistributes the spaces and frees up a vast single-level area: you can helm under cover while remaining in contact with the rest of the crew, whether they are in the galley or relaxing on the trampolines. It is a configuration that struck us as particularly coherent for bluewater cruising and should prove especially welcome during long night watches.
And we won’t be stopping at this first experience in light airs: Ludovic Roussille will spend two weeks aboard the Windelo 55 Sport during the next edition of the ARC, as media man for Multihulls World. A full-scale transatlantic crossing will provide the opportunity to assess the handling and performance, as well as life aboard this new model. See you on the starting line in mid-November!
