X-Wing

A New American Career for the Orphie 29

We tested the Orphie 29 in our MW183 issue; the small electric trimaran has now been renamed X-Wing by Nova Luxe Yachts.

This compact electric multipower takes an original approach: rather than seeking maximum range on every outing, it focuses on balancing energy consumption with solar production. Designed as a picnic boat that can remain on a mooring and be ready to use at any time, this trimaran carries 1.3 kWp of solar panels combined with a 40 kWh battery bank.

According to the builder, three days of exposure to sunlight are enough to fully recharge the batteries, while a typical outing would consume only around 30% of their capacity. This should make regular use possible in favorable conditions, without necessarily having to return to a dockside charging station.
Propulsion is provided by two 8 kW electric pods. With a beam of 19' (5.79 m) for a length of just 29' (8.84 m), the X-Wing features a particularly wide platform, while its draft of less than 2' (0.61 m) should allow it to approach shallow anchorages with ease.
